NYTELY GUIDE · GETTING STARTED

Give the first message somewhere to go.

A useful roleplay opening gives the character enough context to react, without deciding their answer for them. Start with where you are, how you know each other and one thing that happens next. These examples are fictional prompts you can adapt.

See the plans

A first date

“We agreed to meet at the little café near the station. I arrive a few minutes early and save the table by the window. What do you order?”

There is a place, a shared plan and a simple question. With Adrian, you can instead build directly on his fake-date greeting: “One dance, then you owe me the story behind that smile.”

A familiar face

“We have been neighbors for a month, but this is the first time we have both ended up on the roof at sunset. I hold up the spare cup of tea. Want one?”

You establish a relationship without inventing a long shared history the character has never seen.

A small mystery

“The bookstore is about to close when I find a handwritten note inside the book you recommended. I bring it to the counter. Is this yours?”

An object gives both characters something to discuss. Leave the answer open so the exchange can develop.

When a scene stalls

  • Answer something the character just said before introducing a new idea.
  • Add one change: a sound at the door, a question, an invitation or a decision.
  • If the tone drifts, say what you want directly: “Let’s keep this light and take it slowly.”
  • Avoid writing both sides of every exchange; leave room for the character’s response.
QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Questions, answered

Do I need a long prompt?

No. A few sentences with a clear setting and one action are usually enough to start. Add details as the scene needs them.

Can I change the story after it starts?

Yes. Tell the character what you want to change. Update important facts in memories so later replies have that context too.
